PhD Thesis on Numerical Simulation of Trickle Bed Reactors

We are looking in collaboration with the Department of Applied Science and Technology of the Politecnico di Torino for a motivated PhD candidate to develop a mathematical/numerical model for the multiphase flow in co(counter)-current trickle bed reactor for biological methanation to predict the performances of a prototype reactor being developed by “Sistema Energetico – RSE S.p.A.”

Trickle bed reactors are governed by a multiphase flow over complex geometries which in our case affects the growth of microorganisms. These organisms absorb CO2 and H2 to produce methane. The different time/space scales and the coupling between the different phases make the numerical simulation of this TBR particularly challenging.

The numerical framework will be based on mathematical/numerical modeling of governing equations of fluidynamics, a evolution model for the bacterial population, and data assimilation techniques to provide a proper modelling for the small scale hydrodynamic.
