We are looking in collaboration with the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Politecnico di Torino for a motivated PhD candidate to develop a numerical framework for the simulation of bio-methanation process in trickle bed reactors (TBR).
Trickle bed reactors are governed by a multi-phase flow over complex geometries which in our case affects the growth of microorganisms. These organisms absorb CO2 and H2 to produce methane. The different time/space scales and the coupling between the different phases make the numerical simulation of this TBR particularly challenging.
The numerical framework will be based on mathematical/numerical modeling of governing equations of fluidynamics, a evolution model for the bacterial population, and data assimilation techniques to provide a proper modelling for the small scale hydrodynamic.
